Urban Heartbeat is a regional project featuring artists from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Together with German painter Jim Avignon they create a mural in a public space in each participating country, followed by an after party. Urban Heartbeat is coming to Jamaica – February/March 2012.

Organized by the German Embassy and the Jamaican-German Society, Urban Heartbeat seeks to identify Jamaican artists who are looking for a challenge and some international exposure. All urban artists, designers, muralists, illustrators, cartoonists are invited to participate by sending in their proposals. The winning designs will be stuck on walls in the streets of all the countries we visit, inspiring the imagination of local artists to blend their work with winning artists, giving rise to something new, a unique fusion of styles. Artists in Jamaica will create an art space within a neighbourhood using the designs made by artists from the other nations. More details here.

Today’s Sunday Gleaner newspaper carries a feature on the unique Bajan/Jamaican artist Nakazzi Hutchinson. Unique because of her distinctly different sculpted creations.

This vivacious young woman is living her dream as she unmasks her soul and sculpts her own path to art lovers across the world, earning comparisons with her highly critical Barbados-born dad, Dr Ikael Tafari, and mother, renowned Jamaican artist Dawn Scott. Hutchinson’s art is exemplary of logistical triumph. Comprising a large collection of ceramic masks of various shapes and sizes, her pieces (if we could call them that) include life-size sculptures suspended from metal beams which come face to face with the viewer or, at other times, resemble towering figures … more here
